Beaba do Samba is a Chicago-based band specializing in the sounds of Brazil. Playing a diverse repertoire of traditional samba, pagode and bossa nova, the group is composed of some of Chicago finest samba and jazz musicians. Its members include:
John Beard - A native of Manchester, England and alum of the Guildhall Conservatory in London, John has been a fixture on the Chicago jazz scene since the late 1990's. A visit to a Mangueira Samba School bateria rehearsal in 2004 forever shifted John's musical focus to samba and he has since studied cavaquinho and percussion with respected sambistas in Rio de Janeiro.
Clarice Cast - Clarice Cast is Beaba's lead percussionist. A native of Sao Paolo, Brazil, Clarice studied percussion at one of Brazil's most elite musical conservatories before relocating to Chicago to study percussion at Northern Illinois University. Clarice also teaches Brazilian percussion and Afro-Brazilian rhythms to aspiring percussionists of all ages and plays with several area Brazilian music bands.
Silvia Manrique - Vocalist Silvia Manrique has been performing Brazilian music in the Chicago area since 2006. Growing up in a household where Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto LPs were the regular soundtrack, Silvia studied Portuguese upon arriving at the University of Illinois so she could understand what 'Chega de Saudade' really meant. Silvia has studied cuica in Rio de Janeiro and danced as part of the Estácio de Sa Samba School at Rio's 2007 Carnaval.
Stephen Ramsdell - A classically-trained guitarist and recognized member of Chicago's jazz community, Steve has played at some of the city's premiere live music spots including the Bop Shop, the Underground Wonder Bar, Magoo's Underground Lounge, Phyllis' Musical Inn, Joy Blue and Katarina's. Steve has performed his own compositions for the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective, Bernie Sahlins' production of the Cure at Troy and concerts at numerous colleges. He currently teaches at the College of DuPage.
